Giuseppe Giornovichi: Croatian-Born Italian Composer and Virtuoso

Early Life and Education

Giuseppe Giornovichi, born to Croatian parents in Italy, began his musical training under the renowned violinist Antonio Lolli. In 1770, he arrived in Paris, where he established himself as a soloist and composer.

Paris and International Recognition

During his nine years in Paris, Giornovichi performed to critical acclaim, showcasing his virtuosity and introducing his own compositions. However, a dispute with the celebrated violinist Chevalier de Saint-Georges forced him to flee the city and seek refuge in Berlin.

Court Musician and Soloist

In Berlin, Giornovichi served as a court musician until 1782. He then traveled to Warsaw and eventually joined the court of Catherine II in Saint Petersburg, where he held the position of imperial violinist. After a brief stay in Stockholm, he settled permanently in Vienna.

London and Musical Rivalry

From 1791, Giornovichi performed extensively in London. However, his career took a downturn after the arrival of the renowned Italian violinist Giovanni Battista Viotti. Eager to prove his superiority, Giornovichi challenged Viotti to a musical duel but was ultimately defeated. A subsequent dispute with pianist Johann Cramer also ended in his refusal to duel and his departure from London.

Later Years and Legacy

Giornovichi spent the remainder of his life working in Hamburg, Berlin, and Saint Petersburg. He died in the latter city and was buried with a performance of Osip Kozlovsky's Requiem at his funeral.

Musical Works

Giornovichi composed approximately 20 violin concertos, of which 17 have survived. His chamber music includes three notable quartets composed during his stay in Hamburg, as well as various other chamber and symphonic works. His music displays a mastery of violin technique and a captivating melodic style.
