Gisela Dulko
Early Life and CareerGisela Dulko, an Argentine professional tennis player, was born on January 30, 1985, in Tigre, Buenos Aires. She discovered her passion for tennis at the age of seven, inspired by her brother, Alejandro. Guided by her brother, who eventually became her coach, Dulko began her tennis journey.
Junior Career
In 1998, Dulko entered the ITF Junior Circuit. In 1999, she reached the quarterfinals of the prestigious Banana Bowl and Orange Bowl. She also enjoyed success in doubles, reaching the semifinals of the Banana Bowl and the final of the Junior Italian Open.
In 2000, Dulko continued her impressive junior career, reaching the semifinals of the Banana Bowl and Junior Italian Open. She culminated the year with victory at the Orange Bowl. In doubles, she reached the quarterfinals of the Italian Open and Wimbledon, and won three major junior tournaments: the US Open (with Maria-Emilia Salerni), the Orange Bowl (with Aniko Kapros), and the Coffee Bowl (with Maria-Jose Argeri).
Dulko's junior career concluded in 2002 after reaching the semifinals of both singles and doubles at the Australian Open, and the semifinals of doubles at the Roland Garros.
Professional Career
Early YearsDulko made her professional debut in September 1999 at an ITF tournament in Buenos Aires. In 2000, she won her first ITF title in doubles at an event in Asuncion, Paraguay. She went on to secure a double victory at a tournament in Montevideo, Uruguay, winning both the singles and doubles crowns.
Breakthrough and Top 100
In 2001, Dulko's career began to take off. She won four singles titles at ITF tournaments and reached her first WTA singles tournament main draw in Miami. In 2002, she qualified for her first WTA main draw at a tournament in Casablanca, Morocco. Dulko also reached her first WTA singles final in Casablanca and made her Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open.
By the end of 2003, Dulko had broken into the top 100 of the WTA rankings, reaching a career-high of no. 93.
Career Peak and Grand Slam Success
In 2004, Dulko continued to rise, reaching a career-high of no. 27 in the world. She won her first WTA singles title in Bogota and reached the fourth round of the Roland Garros.
In 2005, Dulko won four WTA doubles titles, including the US Open Series title in Cincinnati with Maria Kirilenko. She reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in doubles with Kirilenko and the semifinals of the Roland Garros in mixed doubles.
Injury and Return to Form
From 2006 onwards, Dulko faced a series of injuries that impacted her results. However, she made a strong comeback in 2008. She won five WTA doubles titles and reached the semifinals of the Stuttgart Open in singles.
Top 10 in Doubles and WTA Finals Victory
In 2009, Dulko achieved her greatest success in doubles. Partnering with Flavia Pennetta, she won the Miami Open, Stuttgart Open, and Rome Masters. She also reached the semifinals of Wimbledon. Dulko became the first Argentine woman to reach the no. 1 ranking in doubles.
National Team Representation
Dulko made her debut for the Argentinian national team in 2000. She represented her country in both singles and doubles, contributing to Argentina's successes in the Fed Cup.
Personal Life
Dulko retired from professional tennis in 2012. She married footballer Fernando Gago in 2011, and they have three children. Dulko is known for her philanthropic work, particularly her support for children's education.
