Biography of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo
Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was born on May 4, 1948. She is the daughter of the popular president Macapagal in the 1960s. She received her education at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. where she studied alongside Bill Clinton, the future president of the United States.
Vice Presidency and Presidency
In the late 90s, when Joseph Estrada, a former actor, became the president of the Philippines, he invited Gloria to be his vice president in order to gain the support of female voters. However, Gloria did not follow Estrada's course, as he lacked knowledge in both politics and economics.
When Estrada was overthrown and brought to trial in January 2001, Gloria became the president of the Philippines. She took decisive actions during her presidency, particularly during a military uprising that occurred after the overthrow of dictator Marcos in 1989. On July 27, Gloria declared a state of emergency and ordered loyal troops to suppress anti-government demonstrations in Manila. The events were sparked by a group of 200 soldiers who had autonomously arrived in the capital from the conflict zone in Mindanao. They had been fighting against Muslim separatists, seized a trade and business center in Manila, and planted explosives around it. They demanded an independent investigation into corruption allegations against the authorities and an increase in their salaries, which had long been overdue. According to local press reports, the president managed to negotiate a successful resolution and persuade the rebels to surrender.
Personal Life
Gloria is married to lawyer and businessman Jose Miguel Tuason Arroyo. The couple has three children.
