Biography of Gordie Howe

Gordie Howe, born on March 31, 1928, in Floral, Saskatchewan, Canada, was a professional hockey player and forward. He began his career in the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1946 and played for a remarkable 35 years.

Early Life and Career

Howe started his hockey journey as a goaltender for the "King George" school team. However, with the guidance of his youth coach Bobby Trike, he switched positions to become a defenseman and later a right winger. In 1945, Howe turned pro by signing a contract with the Detroit Red Wings' farm team. He then joined the main team in 1946, marking the beginning of the Red Wings' most successful era. From the 1948-49 season to the 1954-55 season, Detroit won the regular championships seven times, setting a record in the NHL.

Later Career and Family

Led by Gordie Howe, the Red Wings continued to excel and reached the finals four times in the 1960s, although they fell short of winning the title. Howe's two sons, Marty and Mark, followed in their father's footsteps and became hockey players. In 1974, the entire Howe family represented the WHA team in a world tour.

Awards and Achievements

Throughout his career, Howe received numerous awards and honors. He won the Art Ross Trophy six times, the Hart Trophy six times, and the Lester Patrick Trophy in 1967. In 1971, Howe was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. He was also inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972 and played in the NHL All-Star Game 23 times. Additionally, he played in the WHA All-Star Game twice.
