Early Life and EducationBorn in London, he served as an assistant to the renowned French chemist Eugène Chevreul in his early career.
Career and Accomplishments
In 1846, he relocated to Manchester and assumed the position of Chemistry Professor at the Royal Institution. Subsequently, he became a professor at the medical school in the city.
Throughout his illustrious career, he conducted extensive research in various fields of chemistry, ranging from chemical technology to hygiene. Among his notable contributions were investigations into carbolic acid, bleaching powder, and sugar production.
Publications
In addition to his groundbreaking research, he authored a significant work titled "Lectures on Coaltar Colours and Dyeing" (1863), which made substantial contributions to the understanding of dyes and their applications.
