Biography of Gregory Smith

Gregory Edward Smith was born on July 6, 1983, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He is a Canadian-American actor who began his professional career in the mid-1990s. Smith appeared in several video and television films before landing the lead role in the summer film "Small Soldiers" in 1998. After that, he starred in several Hollywood projects and gained recognition for his role as Ephram Brown in the television series "Everwood".

Early Life and Family

Smith's mother, Terrea Smith (nee Oster), was a teacher, and his father, Maurice Smith, was a low-budget film producer. His mother appeared in several projects produced by his father. Smith has two brothers, Andrew and Douglas (who is also an actor), and a younger sister, Samantha. He grew up in Vancouver and is a citizen of the United States.

Early Acting Career

Smith began performing at the age of fourteen months, appearing in commercials for Tide detergent and several catalogs. After his childhood film "Andre" in 1994, Gregory played the lead role in the video film "Leapin' Leprechauns" and its 1996 sequel "Spellbreaker: Secret of the Leprechauns". In the same year, he starred with Michelle Trachtenberg in "Harriet the Spy". He then landed the lead role in another video film, "Shadow Zone: My Teacher Ate My Homework". In 1998, Smith took on three roles - one of the children of the main character in "Krippendorf's Tribe", Danny Himes in "The Climb", and the main character, Alan Abernathy, in "Small Soldiers". His role in the latter project, alongside Kirsten Dunst, earned him a Young Artist Award for Best Leading Young Actor in a Feature Film in 1999.

Continued Acting Career

In 2000, Smith appeared in Mel Gibson's film "The Patriot". He then had roles in the 2001 film "American Outlaws" and the short-lived CBS series "Kate Brasher". Soon after, Gregory was cast in the lead role in the television series "Everwood", in which he successfully portrayed the character from 2002 to 2006. His performance in the show was described by critics as "one of the best portrayals of a thoughtful, alienated teenager on television". For this role, Smith received another Young Artist Award for Best Leading Actor in a Television Series. During the filming of "Everwood", Gregory purchased his own home in Park City, Utah.
