Zhdanovich's fencing career began in earnest in 1963 when he joined the Soviet national team. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a five-time USSR champion in individual competitions.

Zhdanovich's greatest triumph came at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, where he won the gold medal in the individual épée event. This marked the first time a Soviet athlete had won an individual Olympic fencing title.

In 1967, Zhdanovich won the silver medal in the individual épée at the World Championships. He followed this up with a gold medal in the same event in 1971, cementing his status as one of the world's top fencers.

Throughout his career, Zhdanovich won numerous other medals at the World Championships, including three team golds, two team silvers, and a team bronze. He also earned bronze in the team épée event at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.
