A Contemporary Chinese Composer: Gu Jianfen
Early Life and EducationGu Jianfen, a celebrated composer of contemporary China, was born in Osaka, Japan in 1935. Her family returned to China when she was six, settling in Dalian. Gu's passion for music emerged early on, and in 1950, she became an accompanist for the Dalian Art Ensemble while simultaneously studying piano. In 1952, she was accepted into the music department of the Lu Xun Institute of Arts in Shenyang.
Beginning of Her Musical Career
After graduating from the institute, Gu joined the Central Song and Dance Ensemble of China. She expressed her dedication to her craft, stating, "I strive to create work that I love and that aligns with my principles. I follow my heart and compose what I feel."
Notable Compositions
Gu Jianfen has written approximately one thousand songs, including "Let's Meet, Young Friends," "Homesickness," "Deep Affection of Green Leaves," and "Birthday Song," which have earned numerous awards and accolades. Her compositions express deep emotional power and have become widely known throughout China.
Fostering Young Talent
Beyond her own compositions, Gu has dedicated herself to mentoring young performers. From 1984 to 1989, she led the "Gu Jianfen Vocal Class," providing vocal instruction and financial assistance to aspiring singers. Her efforts have helped launch the careers of renowned musicians such as Mao Amin, Na Ying, and Sun Nan.
Recognition and Humility
Despite her prominence in the music industry, Gu Jianfen remains humble and focused on the impact of her work. She has consistently avoided self-promotion, stating, "I am a composer, and it feels awkward to be in the spotlight."
Next Generation and Farewell Stage
Today, Gu Jianfen serves as Vice Chairman of the Chinese Musicians' Association and a member of the National People's Congress' Standing Committee. While she remains active in public service, her passion for composing continues unabated, particularly in the area of children's music.
Music as Her Soul
"My life has been filled with music, and it is my greatest joy," Gu Jianfen says. "Through music, I have discovered the human spirit and found a voice for my aspirations. It is the most fulfilling pursuit for me."
