French Poet and Music Critic

Early Life and Education

French poet and music critic, he was born in Marseille. He studied at the Paris Conservatory (1827) and attempted to pursue a singing career in Paris, with limited success.

Return to Marseille and Musical Criticism

In 1830, he returned to Marseille and taught at the conservatory. He published his musical criticism in the newspaper "Sémaphore de Marseille."

Literary Success with "Chichois"

In 1840, he published a short verse novel in Provençal, "Chichois, or the Rogue of Monsieur Long" (Chichois vo lou nervi de Moussu Long). Inspired by the satirical poems of Auguste Marcel Barthélemy, the novel depicted a reckless, lawless character that became a popular figure in Marseille and a reflection of the city's spirit.
