Biography of Guy Johnson
Guy Johnson, an American artist, was born in 1927 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He is considered one of the pillars and founders of photorealism, as well as a prominent representative of pop art and hyperrealism.
Early Life and Education
At the age of 18, Johnson enlisted in the army and served in the American Navy for 15 months. After completing his service, he decided to pursue a career as an art teacher. Johnson spent five years studying at the School of Arts in Sarasota, Florida, and obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1950. He furthered his education and earned a Master's degree from the University of Florida in 1952.
Artistic Career
Johnson taught as a professor until 1967, when he decided to dedicate his life solely to painting. In the late 1960s, he became interested in a new style of painting called photorealism. In 1971, he presented his first solo exhibition at the Hundred Acre Gallery in New York City. Since then, Johnson's paintings have been featured in numerous exhibitions of hyperrealist artists around the world.
During this time, he also met Bo Elverid, a Swedish art dealer who offered to purchase all of his paintings for five years. After the contract ended in 1976, Johnson began working with Louis Meisel, whose gallery has been showcasing Johnson's work since 1979.
