Biography of Hakimullah Mehsud
Hakimullah Mehsud was a Pakistani terrorist and the leader of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). He took over the leadership of the Taliban in 2009 after the death of his brother, Baitullah Mehsud. On January 12, 2012, it was reported by several media outlets that he died as a result of an attack by an American drone on the city of Miranshah.
Early Life and Education
Hakimullah Mehsud was born in a suburb of the city of Jandola in South Waziristan. He studied at a religious school in the Hangue district, where his brother Baitullah Mehsud was also enrolled. However, Baitullah was expelled from the school. Hakimullah then joined the mujahideen in jihad, where he became a bodyguard for a senior militant.
Rise to Power
His brother Baitullah Mehsud was already making a name for himself as a leader of the Taliban movement. Hakimullah Mehsud was known among the Taliban for his skills in handling Kalashnikov rifles and his driving expertise. After Baitullah, the leader of the Pakistani Taliban, was killed in a drone strike in South Waziristan, Hakimullah took over the leadership of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan. Under his command, the Taliban captured and held captive 300 Pakistani soldiers. This act of kidnapping soldiers increased Hakimullah's authority and eventually the Pakistani government released several top militants from prison in accordance with the Taliban's demands.
Death
According to reports from American and Pakistani media outlets, Hakimullah Mehsud died from injuries sustained on January 12, 2011, when an American drone targeted the city of Miranshah.
