Halil İnalcık: Leading Turkish Historian of the Ottoman Empire

Early Life and Education

Born on May 26, 1916, in Istanbul, Halil İnalcık was of Crimean Tatar descent. His parents had left Crimea in 1905. After graduating from a pedagogical lyceum in Balıkesir, İnalcık went on to receive his undergraduate degree from Ankara University in 1940.

Scholarly Career

İnalcık's dissertation on Timur caught the attention of Mehmed Köprülü. In 1942, he earned his PhD for his work on the status of Bulgarians within the Ottoman Empire, particularly during the Tanzimat era. This research marked one of the first instances of a socio-economic approach in Turkish historiography.

Influences and Collaborations

İnalcık became a member of the Turkish Historical Society in 1947. In 1949, he traveled to London, where he studied Ottoman and Turkish inscriptions at the British Museum and met with Paul Wittek. At a conference in Paris in 1950, he encountered Fernand Braudel, who had a profound influence on his work.

Return to Turkey and International Recognition

Returning to Turkey in 1951, İnalcık taught at Ankara University from 1952 onwards. He also lectured at Columbia University (1953-54) and Harvard University (1956-57). Political instability in Turkey led him to leave the country.

Work at the University of Chicago

From 1972, İnalcık worked at the University of Chicago, teaching Ottoman history until 1986. In 1990-92, he delivered lectures at Harvard and Princeton Universities.

Legacy and Return to Turkey

İnalcık returned to Turkey in 1992 and continued teaching at Bilkent University until his death. In 1993, he donated his collection of Ottoman history publications to Bilkent University. Halil İnalcık passed away on July 25, 2016.
