Hannes Sigurdsson: Icelandic Footballer and Manager
Hannes Sigurdsson is an Icelandic former footballer and current manager of German club Wacker Burghausen. He represented the Iceland national team at international level and played as a striker throughout his career.
Early Career and International Debut
Sigurdsson began his professional career at Icelandic club Hafnarfjörður in 2001, winning the bronze medal in the Icelandic championship and reaching the League Cup final. He then moved to Norwegian side Viking and later to English club Stoke City before signing for Danish Superliga club Brøndby in 2006. During his time at Brøndby, he made nine appearances and scored twice, before returning to Viking, where he earned a third-place finish in the 2007 Tippeliga.
In 2008, Sigurdsson joined Swedish club Sundsvall, scoring two goals in his debut match but ultimately helping the team finish 15th and relegate to the Superettan. In 2010, he returned to Hafnarfjörður before coming to Russia for a trial with Spartak Nalchik, eventually signing a contract with the club.
Russian and Kazakhstani Stint
Sigurdsson made his Russian Premier League debut for Spartak Nalchik in 2010 and remained with the team until 2011. In February 2012, he moved to Kazakhstani club Atyrau.
International Career
Sigurdsson represented Iceland at various youth levels, including the UEFA European Under-16 and Under-19 Championships. He made his senior debut in 2005 and scored his only international goal in a friendly against Poland the following year.
Coaching Career
Upon retiring from playing, Sigurdsson began his coaching career. He served as an assistant coach for Hafnarfjörður before becoming the head coach of German club Wacker Burghausen in 2017.
