Biography of Hansjörg Wyss

Hansjörg Wyss, a renowned businessman and philanthropist, was born in Bern, Switzerland. He attended the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich from 1955 to 1959, where he earned a master's degree in civil engineering. Later, from 1963 to 1965, he pursued a master's degree in business administration at Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts, graduating with honors.

After completing his education, Wyss held various positions in the textile industry from 1965 to 1969. Notably, he served as the President and Managing Director of Lapidus in Sweden. In 1969, he was appointed as the General Director of Monsanto Europe in Brussels, overseeing the synthetic chemical fiber division.

In 1975, Wyss was approached by Professor Martin Allgöwer to lead the manufacturing operations of a struggling synthetic fiber company in Pennsylvania. Despite the company's initial lack of profitability, Wyss agreed to become the President and CEO in 1977. Taking on this role meant leaving his previous position at Monsanto Synthetics in the United States. However, Wyss saw an opportunity to expand the company's product line and establish a strong presence in North America.

Driven by his determination, Wyss set three key goals for the company: significantly increase its turnover, establish manufacturing capabilities in the United States, and focus on product promotion in North America. Despite the risks involved, he successfully achieved these objectives, propelling the company into the forefront of the medical device and implant industry in North America.

Currently, at the age of 72, Wyss is the President of Synthes, a Swiss company specializing in medical implants and biocompatible materials. Under his leadership for the past thirty years, the company has made significant advancements in medical technology. Additionally, Wyss is the head of the Wyss Foundation, a philanthropic organization known for its generous contributions to education. The foundation has supported numerous individuals in their pursuit of higher education, funding their studies and granting them master's degrees.

While Wyss is a Swiss citizen, he resides in New York, USA. He also owns a 900-acre ranch and vineyard in California. With an estimated net worth of 6.0 billion US dollars, Hansjörg Wyss continues to make a significant impact in the healthcare industry and charitable endeavors.
