A Remarkable Journey
Most children dress up as their favorite superheroes just for fun and games with their friends in the backyard. However, 5-year-old Harley Renshaw "became" a superhero to gather the courage he needed. The young boy was undergoing chemotherapy to battle an aggressive form of cancer, and wearing a ninja turtle mask helped him conquer this difficult challenge.
Harley was diagnosed with cancer in his kidneys, lungs, bones, and neck soon after he started attending preparatory school. Over the course of three months, the brave boy had to endure 14 sessions of chemotherapy. Throughout his treatment at Christie Hospital in Manchester, he never parted with his special mask adorned with his favorite mutant turtle.
A Source of Inspiration
Harley's mother, 23-year-old Stacey Parker, and father, 25-year-old Oliver Renshaw, stated that Harley coped remarkably well with his difficult situation. Along with the superhero mask, the courageous cancer fighter was given special "bravery beads" to enhance his confidence. Stacey says, "He never complained about the procedures he had to go through. He has a huge scar on his abdomen, and he calls it his 'pirate scar.' We are so proud of our boy." She continues, "He has been through so much this past year, and he just took it all in stride. He is a true inspiration, our hero."
A Devastating Diagnosis
Harley's family realized that something was wrong when he started attending school. He complained about stomach pains, and his mother decided to take him to the hospital. The diagnosis was devastating: neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of childhood cancer. He was referred to Manchester, where he underwent innovative and exhausting treatment. The intensive chemotherapy period lasted for approximately 80 days, during which Harley also had surgery to remove a kidney tumor. A month later, the child returned to the hospital for a stem cell transplant. Precautions were taken to ensure his body would tolerate the procedure, and Harley was able to spend his fifth birthday at home with his family.
A Continued Battle
Afterwards, it was time for radiation therapy, which lasted an additional 14 days. Currently, Harley is preparing for a five-month treatment, during which he will undergo five courses of immunotherapy. Reflecting on their journey, Stacey recalls, "When we received Harley's diagnosis, we were absolutely shocked. Our world crumbled. We were filled with terror. But Harley never complained about how painful his treatment was. The hospital staff was amazed at how well he behaved during radiation therapy and how calm he remained."
A Shining Star
In recognition of his bravery and courage in the face of challenging trials, the 5-year-old British boy was awarded the "Little Star" by Cancer Research UK. This accolade is given to young patients who have shown remarkable strength while battling cancer.
