Early Life and Background
Harry Jay Knowles was born on November 4, 1971, in Austin, Texas, to Jarrell Jay Knowles and Helen Jane (Harrison) Knowles. He spent his early years traveling throughout the Southwest and Mexico, where his parents operated a rock band light show. Later, the family settled in Austin, where they established a comic book, movie memorabilia, and curio shop on the second floor of their Victorian home.

From a young age, Knowles was an avid film buff, consuming movies voraciously. He developed an uncanny ability to discern the qualities of a well-crafted film. His parents' divorce in 1983 took a toll on him, and he spent more time watching old movies and reading comics. He became an active Eagle Scout during this period.
Tragedy Strikes
In 1989, Knowles moved in with his father in Austin. He had been living on the family ranch in Seymour, Texas, with his mother, Helen, until a tragic fire in 1992 claimed her life.

In 1994, Knowles purchased a computer with insurance money from his mother. With the help of a friend, he set up a network to play Doom with his buddies. Soon after, he discovered the internet and became a regular visitor of film-related forums.
