Hermann Köstlin
Hermann Köstlin was a renowned Protestant theologian, pastor, and musicologist.
Early Life and Education
Born as the son of Christian Reinhold Köstlin, Köstlin pursued theological studies at the University of Tübingen.
Pastoral and Academic Career
After his ordination, Köstlin served as a pastor in several churches throughout Germany, including Maulbronn and Stuttgart. In 1871-78, he lectured on music at the University of Tübingen. From 1895-1901, he held a professorship in theology at the University of Giessen.
Theological and Musicological Contributions
Following Christian Palmer, Köstlin emphasized the integral role of the church choir in uniting the church community. His theological and musicological writings addressed the intersection of these fields.
