Early Life and TrainingBorn in Dingden, Germany, on November 11, 1767, Bernhard Heinrich Romberg began his musical journey as a young violinist under the guidance of his father. Later, he studied flute with August Schroeck, a renowned soloist in the orchestra of the Berlin Opera.
Military Service and Royal Connections
During the War of the Sixth Coalition in 1813, Romberg served as a flutist in the orchestra of the Kolberg Regiment. Upon the war's end, he returned to Berlin and joined the royal chapel (now Staatsoper Unter den Linden).
Triumph in Saint Petersburg
In 1822, Romberg embarked on a successful tour to Saint Petersburg. His virtuoso performance earned him an invitation to become a soloist in the orchestra of the Imperial Theater, where he remained for 16 years.
Musical Director and Acclaimed Performer
In 1836, Romberg was appointed musical director of the Imperial Theater. The following year, he visited Germany and gave concerts in Berlin and Breslau, receiving widespread acclaim from the press.
Composer and Teacher
In addition to his virtuosity on the flute, Romberg composed a substantial body of works, including solos, duets, and ensembles for the instrument. The renowned Russian composer Mikhail Glinka praised Romberg's exceptional talent as a soloist during the rehearsals for the premiere of his opera "A Life for the Tsar" (1836).
