Biography of Helen Gale

Helen Gale is an American businesswoman, president, and CEO of CARE USA, the American division of one of the world's leading charitable organizations. She was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. Gale received her education at Barnard College, the University of Pennsylvania, and Johns Hopkins University. She obtained a bachelor's degree from Barnard, a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and a master's degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University. Her specialization is in pediatrics.

Before joining CARE USA, Gale led several medical programs at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, focusing on combating HIV and tuberculosis. She also worked on HIV prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and later served on President Barack Obama's council, where she continued her work on HIV prevention.

Upon joining CARE USA, Gale actively promoted the organization's projects and successfully recruited a number of women and girls to join the fight against poverty. Under Gale's leadership, CARE USA shifted its focus towards projects with long-term impact. She also played a significant role in expanding the organization's partnerships.

Three notable projects initiated by Gale at CARE USA include "Mothers Matter," which focuses on improving maternal and child health in Africa, Asia, and Latin America; "Power Within," which provides educational programs and resources for girls worldwide; and "Access Africa," dedicated to developing financial services and organizations in countries in need.

Currently, Helen Gale serves on the boards of several prominent organizations, including the Rockefeller Foundation, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Colgate-Palmolive, and ONE. Her achievements have earned her numerous prestigious awards and honors, including recognition from Columbia University, Spelman College, the Eleanor Roosevelt Center, and Bryn Mawr College. She holds honorary degrees from Washington University and Emory University.
