Early Life and Education

Heinrich Born was born into a railroad worker's family in 1949. After graduating high school in Stralsund, he joined the Karl Liebknecht Naval Academy in 1963, graduating in 1967 as a Lieutenant.

Naval Career

Junior Officer (1967-1972)

Born served as a gunnery officer on Project 50 patrol ships from 1967 to 1970. From 1970 to 1972, he commanded the Condor-2-class minesweeper "Riesa". He was promoted to Captain Lieutenant in 1972.

Command of the "Berlin" (1976-1979)

After graduating with honors from the K.E. Voroshilov Naval Academy in Leningrad in 1976, Born was assigned to command the Project 1159 patrol ship "Berlin". However, the ship's arrival from the USSR was delayed until 1979, and Born and his crew spent the interim period on a training ship.

Staff Officer and Fleet Commander (1978-1984)

Born served as head of the operational work group in the 4th Flotilla staff in 1978. He played a role in planning the "Brotherhood in Arms 80" Warsaw Pact naval exercises and was promoted to Frigate Captain in 1980. From 1981 to 1984, he held various staff positions in the 4th Coastal Protection Brigade and the 1st Flotilla, becoming its commander in 1984.

Senior Officer (1985-1990)

Command of the Volksmarine (1989-1990)

After being promoted to Commodore in 1985 and Rear Admiral in 1988, Born became the youngest Rear Admiral in the Volksmarine. In August 1988, he led a goodwill visit of East German naval ships to Gothenburg, Sweden. After Admiral Theodor Hoffmann became Minister of National Defense, Born was appointed Commander of the Volksmarine on December 11, 1989. He was promoted to Vice Admiral the same day.

Unification and Retirement (1990)

Born was dismissed from service on October 2, 1990, after German reunification. After serving briefly as a civilian advisor to the Bundesmarine, he worked at Bremer Vulkan shipyard and later as a sales manager for MAN Turbo AG in the Caspian Sea region.
