Peter Canisius, the Canonist and Historian

Peter Canisius, a Dutch canonist and historian, was the nephew of the prominent Jesuit Saint Peter Canisius. Born in Nijmegen, Netherlands, he pursued his education at the University of Leuven and became a professor of canon law at the University of Ingolstadt in 1590.

Major Works in Canon Law

Canisius made significant contributions to the field of canon law, authoring several influential works:

- "Summa Juris Canonici" (1594): A comprehensive treatise on canon law.

- "Praelectiones Academicae" (1609): Lectures on canon law.

- "De Sponsalibus et Matrimonio" (1613): A study of marriage and betrothal.

A collective volume of these works was published in Leuven in 1649 and later reprinted in Cologne in 1662.

Historical Publications

As a historian, Canisius primarily focused on publishing historical materials. He compiled seven volumes of ancient texts, known as "Antiquae Lectiones, seu antiqua monumenta ad historiam mediae aetatis illustrandam" (1601-1608).

Additionally, Canisius published important medieval chronicles, including:

- "Chronica Victoris Episcop. Tunnunensis et Joannis Episcop. Biclariensis": Chronicles of Victor and John.

- "Legatio Luitprandi": An embassy account by Liutprand of Cremona.

- "Historiae miscellae Pauli Diaconi": Historical miscellany by Paul the Deacon.
