German Book Merchant

Gustav Heinrich Klem(m) was a German book merchant who possessed a rich collection of incunabula. In 1885, his impressive catalog of these early printed books was acquired by the Saxon government, forming the foundation for the Leipzig Museum of Book Arts.

Publication Contributions

Beyond his collection, Klem is also known for his published work, "Illustriertes Handbuch der höhern Bekleidungskunst" (Leipzig, 1846), which became a highly influential manual on the art of garment making. It went through multiple editions, with the 50th edition published in Dresden in 1892 under the revised title "Handbuch der Bekleidungskunst."
