Born in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, Henry Cockburn was an English footballer who left an indelible mark on the sport.

Early Life and Career

Cockburn's footballing journey began at Goslings United youth club in the early 1940s, where he showcased his abilities as a forward. In 1943, he joined Manchester United's youth academy and signed a professional contract in 1944. However, his debut was delayed by World War II until 1946. By then, he had transitioned to the position of outside-half.

Manchester United Success

Cockburn became an integral part of Manchester United's iconic team in the post-war era. He played a pivotal role in the club's FA Cup triumph in 1948 and their league championship victory in the 1951/52 season. During this time, he also made his debut for England, earning 13 caps.

Later Career and Coaching

After leaving United in 1954, Cockburn spent the following seasons with Bury and Peterborough United. He briefly played for Corby Town and Sankey's before retiring from professional football. Post-retirement, he embarked on a coaching career, serving as an assistant coach at Oldham Athletic and later as an assistant and manager at Huddersfield Town.
