Biography of Henry Ross Perot
Henry Ross Perot, the owner of Perot Systems Corporation, Inc, is a successful businessman from Texas, who is also famous for running for the presidency of the United States twice – in 1992 and 1996. He was born in 1930 into a cotton collector's family. His career, which was quite successful from the beginning, was initially associated with the Boy Scouts organization and later, during his military service, with the Navy. In 1949, he enrolled in the U.S. Naval Academy, where he stood out among his fellow students with his intelligence – for example, he helped reorganize and introduce a new reward system. By 1953, he became a battalion commander – it seemed that a career in the Marines was guaranteed for him. However, he soon became disillusioned with his service and resigned from the military after completing his four-year term. This marked the beginning of his rapid ascent as a businessman.
Entrepreneurial Success
After joining IBM, he rose to the position of senior executive within a few years, significantly increasing the department's sales. Despite his sales success, the company's management was not quick to implement the ideas of the young and ambitious manager. In 1962, Henry Ross decided to start his own company. Electronic Data Systems (EDS) was established that same year, but success did not come immediately for the young businessman. Only thanks to a large government contract, Mr. Perot was able to get on his feet, which became a turning point in increasing his capital. By 1984, the company was worth $2.4 billion, and Henry Ross sold EDS to the major holding company General Motors for that amount. After this, in 1988, he founded his own company, Perot Systems Corporation, Inc., which was later managed by his son, Henry Ross Perot Jr. Meanwhile, Mr. Perot Sr. embarked on a political career.
Political Career
Simultaneously with the sale of EDS, Mr. Perot Sr. began several public programs. In particular, he led a project to prepare and implement changes in drug legislation in the state of Texas and implemented several educational projects. Thanks to his connections in the military, he was one of the leaders of the operation to free American hostages in Iran. Such activities made him popular among the people, and in the early 1990s, he announced his plans to run for the presidency of the United States. He criticized the government's actions, especially regarding the military operations in the Persian Gulf. Initially, his position gained support in many states. However, his temperament, rumors of secret investigations against other candidates, and the collection of compromising information undermined trust in him. He qualified to participate in the elections but did not garner enough votes. He faced the same failure in 1996. Since then, Mr. Perot has mainly been involved in investments. Additionally, he writes books on economic and financial topics and provides significant support to funds for military veterans.
