In 1937, he joined the animation division of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as a screenwriter, collaborating extensively with director Tex Avery.

In 1952, Allen's literary career took off with the publication of his first Western novel. He went on to publish over 50 novels, eight of which were adapted into films. Most of his works were written under the pseudonyms Will Henry and Clay Fisher.
