Andreas Leonhard Creutzwald

Andreas Leonhard Creutzwald was a Courland pastor and agricultural specialist. After studying at the University of Göttingen from 1764 to 1767, he returned to the small town of Kabile and served as a priest there from 1768. In 1818, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his ministry, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Dorpat. He published several catechetical works. In 1784, he opened a school for Latvian children in his parish.

Pioneer in Potato Cultivation

Creutzwald was the first to introduce potato cultivation in Courland. He authored the seminal work "Courland Agriculture" ("Die kurländische Landwirthschaft"), published in Mitau in 1804 and 1818.

Journalistic Endeavors

He published one of the first Latvian-language journals in Courland, "Mēļa Pamoca un Gaismas Spīdeklis" (1821-1824, 8 issues).
