Birth and Early Life

Gerold Belger was born on October 28, 1934, in Engel, Russia, to a Volga German family. In 1941, he was deported to Kazakhstan as an ethnic German under Stalin's decree. Belger grew up in a Kazakh village and attended a Kazakh secondary school.

Education and Career

Belger studied philology at Kazakh Pedagogical Institute (now Abay University) in Almaty. After graduating, he worked as a Russian language teacher and later at the literary magazine "Zhuldyz." Since 1964, he has been a full-time writer and translator.

Literary Achievements

Belger is a renowned translator, having translated Kazakh classics like Mailyna, Musrepova, and Nurpeisov into Russian. He has also authored numerous novels, short stories, and literary critical works that explore the history and contemporary challenges faced by Russian Germans and their literature.

Awards and Recognition

Belger joined the Union of Writers of Kazakhstan in 1971. In 1992, he became the deputy editor of the German-language almanac "Phoenix." In honor of his 75th birthday, the Ministry of Culture and Education funded a ten-volume edition of his works.

Political Involvement

Belger served as a deputy in the Supreme Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan from 1994 to 1995.
