Education and Early Career
Khachatur Avetisi Barseghyan was born into a family of intellectuals in Yerevan, Armenia, in 1921. His father was a prominent writer and editor, while his mother was a teacher. Barseghyan received his elementary and secondary education in Yerevan. In 1937, he entered the history department of the Khachatur Abovyan Armenian Pedagogical Institute, graduating in 1941. In 1931, he joined the Komsomol (Young Communist League), and in 1940, he became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
Military Service and Post-War Career
In 1941, with the outbreak of World War II, Barseghyan joined the Soviet Army and served in the 89th Taman Armenian Rifle Division. He fought on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War and was awarded the Orders of the Red Star and the Patriotic War, as well as several other medals for his bravery. After the war, Barseghyan resumed his education, completing his postgraduate studies at the Yerevan Armenian State University in 1948.
In the post-war years, Barseghyan held various editorial and administrative positions, including editor of the newspaper "Banvor" in Leninakan, head of the Press, Publishing, and Radio Sector of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia (CPA), and deputy editor of the newspaper "Soветакан Айастан." He also served as director of the Institute of Party History at the CPA Central Committee and the Armenian branch of the Institute of Marxism-Leninism at the CPA Central Committee.
Academic and Literary Contributions
Alongside his journalistic and academic administrative work, Barseghyan was a prolific author and researcher. He wrote over a thousand articles, correspondence pieces, and other journalistic works. He also published several books, including "V. I. Lenin: A Great Organizer and Leader of the Communist Party," "History of the Publication of V. I. Lenin's Works in Armenian," "Together with Lenin," and "Armenian Leniniana."
Barseghyan's research interests extended beyond Leninology. He also published works on the history of Armenian journalism, book science, and other social sciences. He was active in the Armenian Academy of Sciences, where he headed the Scientific Research Institute of Social Sciences from 1970. He also taught at the Yerevan State University, the Yerevan Pedagogical Institute, and the University of Vanadzor.
Leadership and Honors
Barseghyan was a prominent figure in Armenian academic and cultural circles. He was vice-president of the Armenian branch of the All-Union Knowledge Society, a nationwide educational organization. He also established and directed the Center for Scientific Information on Social Sciences.
Barseghyan was frequently invited to participate in international and all-Union conferences and symposia, where he delivered lectures on history, scientific communism, book science, and other topics. He was elected as a member of the Yerevan City Council, the Myasnikyan District Council, and the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR. He was also a member of several editorial boards and scientific councils, including the State Publishing Committee of the Armenian SSR, the Institute of History of the Armenian SSR, and the Armenian Soviet Encyclopedia.
For his contributions to academia and culture, Barseghyan received several awards, including the Sergei Vavilov Medal, the "For Active Work" Medal from the Knowledge Society, the Khachatur Abovyan Medal, and the Sarkis Shahumyan Prize. In 1987, he was awarded the title of Honored Worker of Culture of the Armenian SSR.
Later Years and Legacy
Towards the end of his life, Barseghyan continued to write and deliver lectures. He passed away in Yerevan in 2007, at the age of 86. His legacy as a scholar, journalist, and public figure continues to inspire generations of Armenians.
