Biography of Hughes Glenn

Early Life and Career

Hughes Glenn, a British vocalist, bass guitarist, and songwriter, was born on August 21, 1951, in the renowned city of Birmingham, United Kingdom. At the age of 15, he left school to join a local rock band as a guitarist. Later, he switched to bass and delighted his fans with his vocal abilities. His first band was called Finder's Keepers, and they primarily performed cover versions.

Trapeze and Deep Purple

In 1969, Hughes joined the English hard rock band Trapeze, which had several successful tours and gained popularity, including in the United States. However, Hughes achieved true fame in Deep Purple, where he worked from 1974 until the group's disbandment in 1976. During this time, he also contributed to Tommy Bolin's solo album in 1975.

Solo Career and Collaborations

After Deep Purple, Hughes revived Trapeze, although the band only toured and did not release any albums at that time. He then began his solo career with the album "Play Me Out" in 1978. In 1982, he collaborated with guitarist Pat Thrall, and their joint album was released under the name Hughes/Thrall. In 1984, Hughes worked with Gary Moore and Joe Lynn Turner, and in 1985, he was part of the supergroup Phenomena.

Black Sabbath and Later Projects

Hughes joined Black Sabbath as the lead vocalist for their album "The Seventh Star" in 1986. However, he had to interrupt the tour due to personal and creative problems, including voice issues caused by drug use. In 1987, he recorded three tracks for the album "Phenomena II" but they were not released. As a backing vocalist, he also recorded with Whitesnake in 1989. Throughout the 90s, Hughes collaborated with various artists and released solo albums regularly, experimenting with different styles while still maintaining his core sound of hard funk. He also participated in side projects and numerous tribute albums.
