Biography of Holly Throsby
Early Life and Musical BeginningsHolly Throsby is an Australian singer, guitarist, pianist, and songwriter, who has been nominated twice for the 'ARIA' award for Best Female Artist. She was born in Sydney, Australia, and began learning to play the guitar at the age of 8. Her mother, Margaret Throsby, is a well-known radio presenter, her uncle, David Throsby, is a prominent expert in cultural economics, and her grandmother was a member of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. From a young age, music was Holly's main passion, and her parents actively supported her in pursuing it. She started learning to play classical guitar at a young age and began writing her own music by the age of 11. After graduating from the University of Sydney with a bachelor's degree in English, Throsby worked at an art-house video store. She also embarked on various travels before recording her debut album, 'On Night'.
Music Career
Throsby enlisted the help of producer Tony Dupe to record her first song, which took place in his cottage in the mountains of New South Wales. The song featured incredible emotion, intricate lyrics, and the natural sounds of local birds, frogs, and even dogs. The album was released under the well-known indie label 'Spunk Records' and received warm reception both in Australia and internationally. Soon after, Throsby went on tour with renowned Australian musicians such as Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Joanna Newsom, Bill 'Smog' Callahan, M. Ward, and Devendra Banhart. In 2006, Throsby released her second album, 'Under the Town', which was again produced by Dupe, but this time with the collaboration of a group of musicians. The album maintained the warmth and quality of her debut project and received highly positive reviews from critics. Throsby then embarked on a tour with the band 'Slint' and guitarist David Pajo.
Recognition and Recent Work
After her tours, Throsby returned to Australia and received her first nomination for the 'ARIA' award. Despite her busy concert schedule, she worked on a new album, 'One of You for Me', with fellow Australian singer Sarah Blasko. For her third album, Throsby traveled to Nashville, where she worked with producer Mark Nevers, while the string and horn sections were recorded in Australia with Dupe. This time, Throsby was joined by Will Oldham and members of 'Lambchop' and 'Silver Jews'. The resulting album, 'Loud Call', is still considered one of Throsby's strongest works. In July 2008, she embarked on a tour of the UK and Ireland with singer-songwriter Paul Kelly. Upon returning to Australia, Throsby continued touring exclusively around the country. In October 2010, she released an album of original children's songs titled 'See!', featuring collaborations with Darren Hanlon, J. Walker, Jack Ladder, and her mother, Margaret Throsby. In addition to her music, Throsby has also released two comic books, some of which were used to design her albums.
