Horst Kiechle is an Austrian model builder known for his realistic paper model of the human torso. His project, "Paper Torso," started in 2011 when Joanne Nakora from the International School Nadi in Fiji Islands asked him to create a lifelike model of the human torso. Kiechle's task was not only to meticulously design the external proportions of the figure but also to create highly realistic internal organs. The heart, intestines, liver, and lungs were all meticulously crafted and could be removed, examined, and placed back in the model.
Using Paper as the Material
Kiechle chose ordinary paper as his material for the models, which affected the level of realism. It is challenging to create a truly accurate model of internal organs using simple paper. However, Kiechle dedicated himself to the task and ensured that the material did not compromise the quality of his work. He completed the first version of the paper torso in just three months and uploaded photos of his masterpiece to his Flickr account.
Gaining Recognition
In January 2012, news of Kiechle's creation spread on the popular website, "My Modern Met." This platform had a significantly larger audience than Kiechle's modest Flickr account, resulting in impressive publicity for the Austrian artist. Although the paper torso was originally created for scientific purposes, its artistic appeal quickly became apparent. Soon, requests flooded in for Kiechle to make the templates of individual organs publicly available.
