José María Aznar: A New Era of Spanish Conservatism

José María Aznar López, born on February 25, 1953, in Madrid, emerged as a transformative figure in Spanish politics, introducing a novel brand of conservatism that distanced itself from the legacy of Francisco Franco.

Early Life and Education

Aznar graduated in law from the Complutense University of Madrid and pursued a career as a tax inspector. His political involvement began in the 1970s.

Ascent in the People's Party

In 1982-87, Aznar served as Secretary-General of the People's Alliance, which later became the People's Party. In 1989, he became Vice-President of the People's Party and a member of Parliament. In 1991, he was elected leader of the People's Party.

Premiership

Aznar led the People's Party to victory in the 1996 elections, securing 156 out of 350 seats in Parliament. He succeeded Felipe González, a moderate socialist who had overseen Spain's transition from dictatorship to democracy, granting greater freedoms to the judiciary and press and integrating the country into the Council of Europe.

Aznar's Conservative Agenda

Aznar's conservatism differed markedly from that of Franco. His program aimed to reduce bureaucracy, stabilize the budget, eradicate corruption, and confront Basque separatism and terrorism. He proposed restructuring the tax system and abolishing universal military service.
