Biography of José Saturnino Cárdenas

José Saturnino Cárdenas is a former Paraguayan football player, known for his skills as a forward. He is regarded as one of the most outstanding Paraguayan footballers in history.

Early Life and Career

Cárdenas began his professional career in 1992 at the age of 18, playing for the Paraguayan club Olimpia. He quickly established himself as a prolific goal scorer and helped Olimpia win the Paraguayan Championship in 1993.

International Success

Cárdenas represented Paraguay in various international competitions. He participated in the 2004 Olympic Games, where Paraguay reached the final but lost to Argentina. He also played in two FIFA World Cups, in 1998 and 2002.

Records and Achievements

Cárdenas holds several impressive records and achievements throughout his career. He is the all-time leading goal scorer for the Paraguayan national team, with 25 goals. He was also named the best player in South America in 2002 and the best FIFA goal scorer in 2003, after scoring 58 goals in a single year.

Club Success

Cárdenas had a successful club career, particularly in Mexico. He played for Club Toluca, where he became the all-time leading goal scorer with 249 goals. He won four Mexican Championships with Toluca in 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2002, as well as the CONCACAF Champions Cup in 2003.

Transition to Coaching

In the 2006/2007 season, Cárdenas retired from playing and began his coaching career. He became the head coach of Club Olimpia in Asunción, Paraguay.
