Biography of Hubert Ingraham

Hubert Alexander Ingraham is a Bahamian politician and statesman who served as the Prime Minister of the Bahamas. Born in Pine Ridge, Grand Bahama, Ingraham studied law in Nassau and became a senior partner in the law firm "Ingraham & Co." in Christie in December 1972. He began his political career in 1975 when he was elected to the National General Council, which was then controlled by the ruling Progressive Liberal Party (PLP).

Ingraham's political career:

In addition to serving as a member of the National General Council, Ingraham also held positions such as a member of the Air Transport Licensing Board and Chairman of the Property Tax Tribunal. He briefly worked in the accounting department of "Owens-Illinois Sugar Mill Company" in Abaco, the Bahamas Telecommunications Corporation, and Chase Manhattan Bank in Nassau.

In 1976, Ingraham interned as a clerk in the law firm "McKinney, Bancroft & Hulse." The following year, he was elected to the House of Assembly and served on the Permanent Committee of Privileges and Public Accounts. He also became the Chairman of the Special Committee on Lobbying and Political Cooperation.

In 1987, Ingraham left the PLP and joined the official opposition. In 1990, he was appointed as the parliamentary leader and became the Leader of the Opposition after the sudden death of Sir Cecil Wallace-Whitfield. In 1992, he led the Free National Movement (FNM) to victory, ending the twenty-five-year rule of the Progressive Liberal Party.

As Prime Minister, Ingraham focused on developing the Bahamian tourism infrastructure. However, due to unfavorable economic conditions, he lost popularity and was replaced in 2002. In 2007, he was once again elected as Prime Minister and continued to serve until 2012.

Throughout his political career, Ingraham has played a significant role in shaping the political landscape of the Bahamas. He led the Free National Movement to victory and brought about a change in government after decades of Progressive Liberal Party rule.
