Early Life and EducationCaspar David Friedrich, a prominent figure in German art history, was born into a modest family in the town of Greifswald. His academic training began at the Königsberg Academy of Fine Arts, where he honed his skills under the tutelage of the renowned artist August Berendsen.
Travels and Artistic Inspiration
In 1861, Friedrich embarked on a transformative journey to Norway. The majestic landscapes he encountered there captivated his imagination, inspiring a series of breathtaking drawings and paintings that showcased the grandeur of the country's mountains and forests. These works were widely praised for their poetic rendering of nature and its elemental beauty.
Teaching and Artistic Legacy
From 1873 onwards, Friedrich held a professorship at the Polytechnic Institute in Karlsruhe, where he imparted his knowledge and artistic vision to aspiring students. His own artistic output continued to flourish, with notable works including ten cartoons depicting scenes from the Icelandic saga of Frithiof (1867) and two series of drawings: "What the Moon Illuminates" and "Tales of the Snow Queen."
