Born Rafael Hugo Fernández Silva on May 10, 1977, in the impoverished San Blas-Canillejas district of Madrid, Hugo Silva grew up in a challenging environment. His mother worked at a local factory and was an active trade unionist with a passion for theater.

Despite the adversity he faced, Hugo Silva harbored a dream of becoming an actor. After finishing school, he chose to become an electrician due to the proximity of a trade school. While working, he began trying out for television and film extras.
