Justice William Ian Corneil Binnie
William Ian Corneil Binnie is a retired justice of the Supreme Court of Canada.
Early Life and Education
Binnie was born in Montreal, Quebec. He graduated from McGill University in 1960 and went on to pursue legal studies at the University of Cambridge and the University of Toronto.
Legal Career
Binnie practiced law with the firm Wright & McTaggart from 1967 to 1982. He then served as Assistant Deputy Minister of Justice in the Government of Canada.
Supreme Court of Canada
In 1998, Binnie was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada, replacing Justice John Sopinka. Like his predecessor, Binnie had never served as a judge prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court.
Tenure on the Court
Binnie served as a junior justice on the Supreme Court of Canada from 1998 to 2014. His appointment was made by Liberal Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, and his term was expected to end in 2014. However, he retired early for health reasons in 2011.
