Early Life and FamilyIda Kamińska was born into a theatrical family in Odessa on September 18, 1899. Her mother, Ester Rachel Kamińska, was a celebrated Jewish actress, while her father, Avram Yitzchak Kamiński, was an actor, director, and producer. Ida's brother, Jozef Kamiński, was a musician, and her cousin, Danny Kaye, became a renowned actor.
Theatrical Beginnings
Kamińska's theatrical career began at the tender age of five in 1904. She made her film debut in 1912 with her mother and sister in a Polish film. Throughout her career, she appeared in only 11 films, but one particular role catapulted her to international recognition.
Academy Award Nomination
In 1965, Kamińska captivated audiences in the Czechoslovakian film "The Shop on Main Street." Her performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in 1966.
Later Career and Legacy
After her last film appearance in 1970, Kamińska continued her theatrical pursuits, touring extensively worldwide. She passed away in New York City on May 21, 1980, due to cardiovascular disease.
Personal Life
Kamińska was married to renowned Polish director and actor Marian Melman. Their daughter, Ruth Kamińska, was the wife of bandleader Eddie Rosner.
