Idris Elba - Biography
Idris Elba, a British actor of stage, film, and television, has appeared in both American and British projects. He is best known for his role as Russell 'Stringer' Bell, a drug lord and ambitious businessman, in the critically acclaimed HBO series 'The Wire'. In addition to his acting career, Elba is also a DJ, performing under the pseudonym DJ Big Driis/Big Driis the Londoner, and a hip-hop soul artist.

Early Life and Career
Idrissa Akuna 'Idris' Elba was born on September 6, 1972, in Hackney, London, England. He is the only child of a Sierra Leonean father and a Ghanaian mother. Elba grew up in Canning Town, East London, and began assisting his uncle, a wedding DJ, in 1986. He later founded his own DJ company with his friends. Elba dropped out of school in 1988 but secured a place in the National Youth Music Theatre with a £1,500 grant. He grew tired of making cold calls and promoting various products to pay the bills and started working as a DJ under the name Big Driis in 1991.

Acting Career
Elba's official work in television, film, and stage began around 1992, but he earned his first role in the TV series 'Bramwell' in 1995. He played a supporting role as a gigolo named Hilton in an episode of the series 'Absolutely Fabulous' titled 'Sex'. He went on to appear in several multi-episode projects, including 'Ruth Rendell Mysteries' and 'The Governor'.
