Early Life and Political Beginnings
Igor Matovič began his political career in 2010 when he was elected to the National Council as a member of the Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party.
Founding "Ordinary People" and Electoral Success
In 2019, Matovič founded the right-wing conservative party "Ordinary People" (OL), which he led to victory in the 2020 parliamentary elections.
Premiership and Controversies
On March 21, 2020, Matovič became Prime Minister of Slovakia. His tenure was marked by controversy surrounding his decision to secretly import the Russian Sputnik V vaccine, which led to a coalition crisis and his resignation in March 2021.
Vice Premiership and Resignation
After his resignation as Prime Minister, Matovič was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance in the government of Eduard Heger. However, on December 15, the National Council voted to dismiss Heger's government. Matovič was dismissed by President Zuzana Čaputová on December 23.
"Joke" and Dispute with Ukraine
In March 2021, Matovič made a jest about ceding Transcarpathia to Russia in exchange for vaccines. Despite clarifying his statement, Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs demanded an apology.
