Professor Ikuo Kameyama: Doyen of Russian Studies in Japan
Early Life and EducationProfessor Ikuo Kameyama was born in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, in 1949. He graduated from the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS) in 1972 with a specialization in Russian. He subsequently pursued doctoral studies at the same institution, earning his degree in 1993.
Academic Career
Kameyama has been a professor at TUFS since 1978. From 1991 to 2002, he hosted a television and radio program on Russian language instruction for NHK. He is a renowned expert on Russian literature, particularly the works of Vladimir Mayakovsky, Velimir Khlebnikov, and Marina Tsvetaeva.
Membership and Affiliations
Kameyama holds leadership positions in both the Japanese Society for Russian Literature and the Japanese Society for Slavic Studies. He has authored over 300 publications and serves as a regular commentator on Soviet-era literature, art, and Dostoevsky's writing on television.
Research Interests
Kameyama's academic focus has evolved over time. Initially drawn to Khlebnikov, he later shifted his attention to avant-garde art. Currently, he is intrigued by Soviet culture during Stalin's regime, exploring the theme of "creative self-expression under the constraints of authoritarianism." In recent years, he has also delved into 19th-century Russian literature.
