Life and Education

Birth and Childhood:

Ilyas Babayev was born on March 23, 1935, in the village of Khanagyah in the Guba region of Azerbaijan.

Education:

Babayev graduated with honors from the Faculty of History at Azerbaijan State University (currently Baku State University) in 1958. He subsequently pursued postgraduate studies at the Leningrad branch of the Archaeological Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the early 1960s.

Academic Career

Doctoral Studies and Dissertation:

In 1965, Babayev defended his doctoral dissertation titled "Monuments of Glyptics in Azerbaijan from the Ancient Era to the Early Middle Ages: Essays on the History of Glyptics in Ancient Azerbaijan" at the Institute of History of the Azerbaijani Academy of Sciences.

Doctoral Thesis:

In 1983, Babayev earned his Doctorate in Historical Sciences with a dissertation titled "Cities of Caucasian Albania in the 4th Century BC - 3rd Century AD" from the Archaeological Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Moscow.

Head of Department:

Since 1987, Babayev has served as the Head of the Department of Archaeology of the Ancient Period at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.

Membership in Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences:

Babayev was elected as a Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (ANAS) in 2007.

Archaeological Research

Archaeological Explorations:

Babayev has organized and participated in numerous archaeological expeditions in various regions of Azerbaijan.

International Collaborations:

He has led international archaeological expeditions and supervised archaeological excavations in Shamkir-Garajamirli in collaboration with foreign experts.

Discoveries:

His research has resulted in the discovery of a Bronze Age burial mound in the village of Dyzakhly, Gabala district, and a large treasure trove in the same area.

Babayev is the author of over 260 scholarly works, including:

Alongside his research, Babayev has delivered public lectures on various historical topics at universities in Azerbaijan for over thirty years.

Babayev was a specialist with INTAS in Brussels.

He served as a member of the Presidential Expert Council on History in the 2000s and later headed the council for a year.
