Early Life and Education

Ingo Metzmacher was born on November 10, 1957, in Hanover, Germany. As the son of Rudolf Metzmacher, he was immersed in music from a young age. He sang in the Hanover Boys' Choir and pursued piano and conducting studies at the Hanover University of Music and Drama.

Ensemble Modern

After graduating, Metzmacher joined the contemporary music ensemble Ensemble Modern as a pianist in 1981. In 1985, he became its Artistic Director, leading the group to prominence in the field of modern academic music.

Operatic Debut and Hamburg Years

Metzmacher made his operatic conducting debut in 1987 and went on to lead productions at the Frankfurt Opera, among others. From 1997 to 2005, he served as General Music Director in Hamburg, overseeing both the Hamburg State Opera and the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra.

International Appointments

In 2005, Metzmacher became Music Director of De Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam, a position he held until 2008. In 2007, he assumed the role of Chief Conductor of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin.
