Early Life and Education

Inge Daubechies was born in Geel, Belgium, in 1954. She earned her undergraduate and Ph.D. degrees in physics from the Free University of Brussels, where she subsequently taught for over a decade.

AT&T Bell Labs and Academia

In 1987, Daubechies joined AT&T Bell Labs, where she specialized in wavelets. She concurrently held teaching positions at the University of Michigan and Rutgers University. In 1994, she became the first female mathematics professor at Princeton University. Since 2011, she has been a Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at Duke University.

Scientific Contributions

Daubechies is renowned for her work in wavelet analysis and image compression. She is credited with developing the theory of compactly supported wavelets, including the Daubechies family of wavelets and the Cohen-Daubechies-Feauveau biorthogonal wavelet.

Accolades and Honors

Daubechies has received numerous awards, including:
Louis Empain Prize in Physics (1984)
