Biography of Johann Heinse
Johann Heinse was a German poet and writer of the "Storm and Stress" era. He is known for his novels "Ardinghello, oder die glückseligen Inseln" (Ardinghello, or the Blissful Islands, 1787, 2 volumes), in which he presents his social ideals ("emancipation of the flesh"; a realm of freedom, beauty, and unrestrained joyful sensuality in the style of ancient Greeks) and his views on art; and "Hildegard von Hohenthal" (1795-1796, 2 volumes), which contains Heinse's thoughts on music. Both novels are valuable materials for understanding the aesthetics of the era.
Other works by Heinse include "Sinngedichte" (1771) and translations such as "Begebenheiten des Enkolp, aus dem Satyrikon des Petron übersetzt" (Adventures of Enkolp, translated from Petronius' "Satyricon", 1773, 2 volumes), "Laidion, oder die Eleusinischen Geheimnisse" (Laidion, or the Eleusinian Mysteries, 1774), and more. Although Heinse had some connections with Rococo writers, he was distant from their refined gallantry, extravagance, and their love for various conventions and poetic formulas. His works are characterized by an abundance of materiality (in the Baroque style), towards everything full-blooded, towards vibrant, loud colors, in the affirmation of unbridled, spilled joy of existence.
The "Young Germany" movement revived the memory of Heinse, and in 1838, a collection of his works (10 volumes) was published. There were also publications such as "Briefwechsel zwischen Gleim und Heinse" (Correspondence between Gleim and Heinse, 1894-1895, 2 volumes).
