Venerable Joachim of the Russian Church

Early Life

Venerable Joachim was born in the 16th century and was a disciple of Saint Euphrosynus of Pskov, the founder of the Spaso-Eleazarovsky Monastery.

Founding Opochka Monastery

Joachim followed in the footsteps of his mentor and established the Opochka Monastery of Saint Elijah the Prophet on the banks of the Shelon River near Porkhov.

Life as Abbot

As Abbot of the Opochka Monastery, Joachim led a life of piety and asceticism. His guidance and teachings inspired the community of monks under his charge.

Legacy

Joachim died around 1550, and his remains are interred under the altar of the Church of St. Elijah in the monastery he founded. Despite the closure of the monastery in 1688, the church remains as a parish church, preserving the memory of Venerable Joachim.

Veneration

Joachim is commemorated on September 9 (Julian calendar) in the Orthodox Church. He is revered as a saint for his dedication to the monastic life and his service to the spiritual well-being of the people of Pskov.
