Irmegard Schwaetzer: A Life in Politics and Academia
Early Life and EducationIrmegard Schwaetzer, born Adam-Schwaetzer, was born and raised in Germany. She attended a gymnasium in Warburg, where she excelled in foreign language studies. After graduating in 1961, she pursued a degree in pharmacy at universities in Passau, Münster, and Bonn.
Pharmaceutical Career
In 1967, Schwaetzer passed the state pharmaceutical exam. She obtained her pharmacy license in 1968 and received her doctorate from the University of Bonn in 1971. Subsequently, she worked as a leading specialist in various pharmaceutical and consumer goods companies.
Political Career
Schwaetzer's political journey began in 1975 when she joined the Free Democratic Party (FDP). She served as the party's General Secretary from 1982 to 1984, replacing Günter Verheugen, who had defected to the SPD. Following that, she held the position of Federal Treasurer from 1984 to 1987.
In 1988, Schwaetzer became Vice-Chair of the FDP after unsuccessfully running for the party's leadership. She held this position until 1994. Additionally, she served as Chair of the Aachen district office from 1997 to 2002.
Bundestag and Ministerial Role
From 1980 to 2002, Schwaetzer was a member of the German Bundestag, representing North Rhine-Westphalia. During her tenure, she chaired the working group on employment and social policy and chaired the FDP parliamentary group's committee on health, family, women, and youth affairs.
In 1991, Schwaetzer was appointed Federal Minister for Regional Planning, Construction, and Urban Development. She held this position until 1994.
Post-Ministerial Career
After stepping down as Minister, Schwaetzer remained active in public life. She serves as Chair of the German Committee for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Cathedral Council of Berlin Cathedral. In 2009, she became a member of the Synod of the Protestant Church of Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia.
