Early Life and Education
Born in Ukraine, the French painter and portraitist spent his formative years in a хедер, a traditional Jewish school. He later attended a private school in Kyiv and worked in a factory.
Artistic Apprenticeship in Paris
In 1912, he relocated to Paris and joined the bohemian art commune La Ruche. During this period, he dabbled in sculpture and became close friends with fellow artists Pinchus Kremegne and Amedeo Modigliani.
The Journey to Painting
Over time, he abandoned sculpture and dedicated himself to painting. He sought instruction at the esteemed academies of Grande Chaumière and F. Colarossi.
Marriage and Artistic Recognition
In 1926, he married V. Kremer, the daughter of renowned politician Arcadi Kremer. By the 1930s, he had established a studio on Rue d'Odessa in Montparnasse. His works were showcased at reputable exhibitions, including the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Indépendants.
Solo Exhibitions and Collaborations
With the support of the magazine Tchisla, he held solo exhibitions at Galerie L'Epoque in 1931 and 1932. In 1938, he exhibited at Galerie Charpentier.
Wartime Refuge and Post-War Recognition
During the Nazi occupation of Paris (1942-44), he found refuge in the Dordogne department. In 1961, he participated in the exhibition "Russian Artists of the Paris School" at the Maison de la Pensée Française.
Legacy and Impact
His paintings are now part of the collections of renowned contemporary art museums. His contributions to the Paris School of art continue to be celebrated and admired by art enthusiasts worldwide.
