Valery Ivanovich Linder was a renowned Russian chess historian, author, and literary figure. He authored over 400 publications on chess culture, including historical, archaeological, ethnographic, and aesthetic perspectives. His works explored the contributions of notable Russian and international chess masters from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Linder's academic credentials were impeccable. He completed his historical studies at Moscow State University in 1942 and pursued postgraduate studies in chess at the Central Research Institute of Physical Culture in 1956. In 1973, he earned his Candidate of Historical Sciences degree with a dissertation on the origins of chess in Russia from the 10th to the 17th centuries.
Journalistic Contributions
Linder's passion for chess extended beyond academia. He served as a chess columnist for esteemed publications such as "Knowledge is Power," "Science and Life" (1950-1962), and the Novosti Press Agency's "Sputnik" magazine from 1978 onwards.
