Biography of Isabel Allende
Isabel Allende is a Chilean writer and journalist, known as one of the most prominent Latin American authors. She was born on August 2, 1942, in Lima, Peru, and is related to Salvador Allende, the former president of Chile, as his niece, and politician Isabel Allende, as a relative. Allende's books have been published in over 27 languages and have sold more than 35 million copies worldwide.

Early Life and Family
Allende's father, Tomas Allende, was a diplomat and the cousin of Salvador Allende, who became the president of Chile in 1970 and was later killed during the military coup led by Augusto Pinochet. Allende has expressed great respect for her uncle, although she saw him only on weekends and realized the legendary and heroic figure he was only after his death. Her mother, Francisca Llona, returned to Chile with three children after divorcing Isabel's father in 1945. She spent her childhood living with her siblings in her grandfather's house.

Journalism Career and Activism
In 1953, when Allende was eleven years old, her mother remarried diplomat Ramon Huidobro. The family moved frequently, living in La Paz, Bolivia, and Beirut, Lebanon, before returning to Santiago, Chile, where Allende finished school and met her first husband, Miguel Frias, an engineer, whom she married in 1962. From 1959 to 1965, Allende had a successful career as a television journalist, working for the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization. She hosted a weekly show about the organization's anti-hunger program.

Allende's family traveled extensively through Europe and lived in Brussels and Geneva for a period of time. In 1966, they returned to Chile, where Allende became a highly sought-after journalist and specialist in women's rights. She founded the newspaper "Paula," the only publication of Chilean feminists, which also featured articles about the left-wing government of Salvador Allende. Allende worked in various television channels as a host for popular shows and conducted interviews, prepared reports, and participated in television discussion programs.
Literary Career and International Recognition
Allende's first novel, "The House of the Spirits," was published in 1982 and became an immediate worldwide success. The book was adapted into a film in 1993, starring Jeremy Irons, Meryl Streep, Winona Ryder, Glenn Close, and Antonio Banderas. Allende went on to write several other critically acclaimed novels, including "Love and Shadows" and "Eva Luna," which solidified her reputation as one of the most prominent Latin American writers.
Her works often incorporate elements of Latin American magical realism, earning her the unofficial title of the "Gabriel Garcia Marquez in a skirt." Allende's writing skillfully captures the culture, history, and struggles of her native country and people. In addition to her novels, Allende also writes plays, teaches literature at various universities, and continues to be engaged in journalism, focusing on women's emancipation and gender equality.
Personal Life and Legacy
Allende moved to California in 1988, where she currently resides in San Rafael. She met her current husband, Willie Gordon, in 1988. In 2003, she became an American citizen. Allende's personal life has been marked by tragedy, including the loss of her daughter, Paula, who fell into a coma and passed away in 1992. Allende wrote a memoir titled "Paula" in 1994, reflecting on her childhood in Santiago and the years of exile.
Throughout her career, Isabel Allende has received numerous literary awards and honors. However, she considers love to be the most important aspect of her life, particularly the love that exists within her family. Allende's writing has been instrumental in introducing Russian readers to the history, culture, and politics of Latin America.
